So, today, the auto work continues but this time it's replacing a broken clock spring on my wife's Passat. Not a difficult job as the most time consuming part was unclipping the airbag/horn button from the steering wheel. Pulled off the steering wheel and disconnected the spring. Installed new and reassembled the rest. Started the vehicle to find out that half of the steering wheel controls and buttons still did not work. Hmmm. Ok, repeat disassembly and check connections. Reassemble, no joy. WTF. Found out the damn thing needed to be programmed properly. Geez, ok, I guess it makes sense considering VW likely uses this same part on many different models with different bells and whistles. So I retrieve my OBD2 connector and associated software and for the next two hours I go through the process of reinstalling the old spring, record the code, install new spring again, compare codes, reprogram with old code and done! Nope, MFI and cruise control still busted. Another 30 and figured out that one digit of the old code was incorrect. Wow, never thought I would have to program a device that simply passed signals to the car's brain while allowing the steering wheel to rotate. Glad I wrote those codes down and what they do. All good, though, the car is back to normal and all faults have cleared. Cheers!
