Hardware cloth won't work, if they want in.

Some of the MKE Herf attendees know about my battle with the sparrows who see the two outside corners of my carport as the perfect place to build a nest and raise their young. It's been an ongoing war ever since I parked my black '98 Accord under there; as you can imagine, it was not acceptable.

Well, this year, there are some new invaders... on one corner some squirrels caught wind of the sparrows' ingenuity and have staked their claim on the southeast corner, and do they ever make a better nest than the sparrows; it's twigs and a half bushel of thatched grass that they must be plucking from my lawn. I thought I'd leave them alone 'cuz at least they don't crap on everything like birds do, but they didn't even ask for permission - they just barged right in - so, to H E Double Hockey sticks with them little bastards. After a week and a half of reaching up there w/ my special nest-busting tool I made a long time ago, it dawned on where they're getting the twigs from; these varmints have taken 1/4 of my Japanese maple's branches. This shall not stand! I'm going to have to riff on a solution @IndustMech offered last year, Great Stuff spray foam and steel wool, subbing in some hardware cloth for the steel wool because of the coverage it'll take.

Why can't they just be happy with the 50' maple that's a mere 20' from my garage? WHY?!?!!!

If my name was Rusty, I'd be out there w/ my .22 and getting me some free dinner, but alas, I am not.

Well, the reason for this rambling backstory is that this morning, I was heading out to tear down whatever they had started since yesterday, and on the sidewalk between the house and the garage, I found the bone pictured below. It looks like it came out of a knee belonging to who-knows-what. Are the squirrels trying to send me a message to stop messing with them? Will I have to send a round-trip ticket from Hayden KY to MKE? Where will this all end?
