He managed to escape his troubled circumstances when he joined the U.S. Air Force at the age of 18. In the military, he found mentors who rewarded his willingness to perform with trust. Above all, his service in the Air Force taught him the discipline that enabled him to realize his full potential. «The military taught me that people don't need motivation; they need self-discipline,» he writes. «Motivation is just a feeling.
