AI can't fact check itself. Why is that so hard?

Newspapers ran a summer reading list with one big problem.
What was it? Many titles were made up by artificial intelligence. The supplement, which ran in the Chicago Sun-Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer, also had unidentifiable quotes.
How did it happen? The freelance writer of the section said he used AI chatbots and didn’t double-check the work. The papers said they’d take more care in the future.
