The original American patriots were those individuals brave enough to resist with force the oppressive power of King George. I accept the definition of patriotism as that effort to resist oppressive state power. The true patriot is motivated by a sense of responsibility, and out of self interest -- for himself, his family, and the future of his country -- to resist government abuse of power. He rejects the notion that patriotism means obedience to the state. [...] Resistance to illegal and unconstitutional usurpation of our rights is required. Each of us must choose which course of action we should take: education, conventional political action, or even peaceful civil disobedience to bring about necessary changes. But let it not be said that we did nothing. Let not those who love the power of the welfare/warfare state label the dissenters of authoritarianism as unpatriotic or uncaring. Patriotism is more closely linked to dissent than it is to conformity and a blind desire for safety and security. Understanding the magnificent rewards of a free society makes us unbashful in its promotion, fully realizing that maximum wealth is created and the greatest chance for peace comes from a society respectful of individual liberty.

Well put. I'm always amazed at how many people can't seem to grasp these basic concepts, on which our nation was founded.

Liberty once again must become more important to us than the desire for security and material comfort. Personal safety and economic prosperity can only come as the consequence of liberty. They cannot be provided by an authoritarian government... The foundation for a police state has been put in place, and it's urgent we mobilize resistance before it's too late... Central planning is intellectually bankrupt – and it has bankrupted our country and undermined our moral principles. Respect for individual liberty and dignity is the only answer to government force, force that serves the politically and economically powerful. Our planners and rulers are not geniuses, but rather demagogues and would-be dictators -- always performing their tasks with a cover of humanitarian rhetoric... The collapse of the Soviet system came swiftly and dramatically, without a bloody conflict... It came as no surprise, however, to the devotees of freedom who have understood for decades that socialism was doomed to fail... And so too will the welfare/warfare state fail... A free society is based on the key principle that the government, the president, the Congress, the courts, and the bureaucrats are incapable of knowing what is best for each and every one of us... A government as a referee is proper, but a government that uses arbitrary force to direct every aspect of society threatens freedom... The time has come for a modern approach to achieving those values that all civilized societies seek. Only in a free society do individuals have the best chance to seek virtue, strive for excellence, improve their economic well-being, and achieve personal happiness... The worthy goals of civilization can only be achieved by freedom loving individuals. When government uses force, liberty is sacrificed and the goals are lost. It is freedom that is the source of all creative energy. If I am to be your president, these are the goals I would seek. I reject the notion that we need a president to run our lives, plan the economy, or police the world... It is much more important to protect individual liberty and privacy than to make government even more secretive and powerful.

    xmacro:
On-topic: Ron Paul. He's against a border fence because "it might be used to keep Americans in",
Well this one's easy, you and your party argue the left is trying to impose socialism which leads to communism. Which you yourself said about a communist country: "You're believing a story from a communist nation in which all dissent is dragged out into the street and shot." this is from the lung cancer cuba story. So if you believe in all this how is it crazy to think that a fence couldn't be used to keep us from dissenting or fleeing the country?
    xmacro:
he's against air conditioning for the troops, thinking their suffering means anything to the top brass,
Wow lol. He wants to bring the troops home and stop these never-ending wars, but of course you missed that point, and went with the "he hates the troops" tactic. The point of the statement was the absurd ammount of money we're spending on wars we have no end game for.
    xmacro:
he thinks 9/11 was America's fault, and thinks the entire Arab world, with no exceptions hates America.
Yeah these countries we occupy just love it that we interfere with their buisness and police their streets. The same way we over here fight against sharia law because we have our own set of laws, they are going to fight us to keep their set of laws. The only difference is they're over here with lawyers and we are over there with heavy artillery. Before you start your "You hate america" bullshit know that I'm arguing for their right to be free just as we should have ours. It's not our job to force them into our version of freedom that thought itself is a paradox. This is not an anti america stance it's an anti imperialism stance. Using your logic the american revolution would have never happened.
    xmacro:
F*cktard just doesn't quite convey how retarded he is. No wonder he's tying for last in the polls
Not sure which fox poll you're talking about but most polls show him in the top 3, several of them put him in first by quite a large number.
    xmacro:
Must be nice to base your entire campaign on bumper sticker slogans, knowing you're not responsible for anything.
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. He stands on the principals of the constitution and you can't handle that. This man writes some of the most pasionate patriotic speeches of our time, but you say bumper sticker slogans. "We gotta get rid of Obama" now thats a bumper sticker slogan and oddly enough it's about all the other candidates say... You're delusional at best with this bullshit statement.

I know marco will not have anything to do with this since he has alredy decried we don't play fair here and need civil tongues and blahblahblah. I just wanted to break down his bullshit rederick as you will see it alot when the status quo loving folks talk of Ron Paul.

I hate our current political party system. We are forced to choose between the "Nanny State" party and the "Ninny State" party. I admire Ron Paul's idealism but he is too far out on some issues. Good fences do in fact make good neighbors and having the biggest, baddest military on the planet makes a lot of sense to me even if you never use it. Where the heck is Teddy Roosevelt when you need him

Perhaps scattering ourselves all over the face of the earth chasing people whose weapon of choice was a box cutter, and bankrupting the country in the process, actually makes us weaker.

No disagreement from me on that. Unfortunately the current administration is pursuing the exact same policy and doubling down on the debt.

Hardly worth mentioning! I'm sure that's how it'll be seen by the media, anyway.

I retitled this thread because this is actually much greater than one man it is a struggle to oppose the overwhelming oppression from american government.

Good change, the idea that we must oppose our own government when it infringes on our liberties without our consent is foreign to some here but I whole hardily support that idea.

I think Gypsy has just summarized the spark that should be the heart and soul of American patriotism in one simple statement. Like the new title, too.

Government wants to own you and your thoughts. This is not a democrat or a republican issues it is a ruling class issue. Good little minions must be stripped of their free thoughts and means to spread them. wake the *** up.

Herman Cain wins the Florida straw poll! Nice job. If nothing else having a guy who really is an economics expert makes sense to me at this time.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you.

    1. Jesus Christ
    and
    2. The American Soldier

One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

    "Long ashes my friends."
