I once had a pipe with a little gizmo like that in the stem, one of my first pipes, I was probably 16 or 17. I think it's supposed to cool and dehumidify. It was a pain to keep clean, and back then I didn't know that taking the stem off while hot would cause permanent changes in the alignment. It did.
I had a lot less knowledge and patience back then, I hated that little gizmo after a few months and got a new pipe. Long time past.

Yep, there's a hole in the "stinger". I didn't realize that this pipe had a stinger when I bought it, I picked it up at a low price from RNA Treasures.

Enjoying some 2007 Peter Stokkebye Luxury Twist Flake from @avengethis in my Briar Blues 25th Anniversary Radice, tasting pretty good, the Coconut note is not distracting at all.

Trying out Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation Evening Flake as a bulk in the same vein as OGS and LGF in my Ropp 2024 PSD POY Dublin with a horn stem while sanding the tenon on a replacement stem for my car pipe and listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd's Four Walls of Raiford.

Thanks, @Yakster I use the same kit every day. I’m a creature of habit and routine…on some things. However, I do enjoy seeing everyone’s cool accessories and niknacks.
First up, a mix of 1792 / Ennerdale for the ride home in my no-name Italian Dublin.
Next up to celebrate re-stemming my cheap RNA Treasures unfinished billiard with a cheap RNA Treasures close-out stem, Eso Dunbar. Not even mad that the stem isn't straight or that the stem is slightly larger than the shank.
I think my next step may be funneling the mouthpiece, it has a slot cut in it but just a round hole drilled in the center of the slot.
