Just a thought regarding all the protests in Washington today.

The conversation that seems to be missing here is the impact the media has in all of this. For those of you saying "why shouldn't we ban cars" the answer is easy. If there was non stop coverage of every automobile accident, some people out there definitely would try and ban them. Remember when Toyota had the issue with gas pedals sticking to the floor? I'm personally not the biggest gun fan, but I don't want to see anything changed because of the principle behind the second amendment. It's not only literal, citizens owning guns, it's also metaphorical, aka citizens having control over their lives and having the power to overthrow the government if the government tries to take that away. It's the same principal as soldiers not being allowed to commandeer your house. Regardless of anyone's second amendment beliefs, these mass shooters know that part of what they're going to get is attention. Most of them are not only bullying victims, but they're friendless and have little guidance or accountability at home. They watch tv and hear about the latest school shooting and see that person being talked about non stop. I believe that if you ban rifle sales to anyone under 21, then the shooter will become a bomber or an ax murderer instead, but none of this is even the issue. The issue is the sensationalizing of these events, and the coverage the shooter gets after the fact, which appeals to the next shooter/bomber/stabber/whateverer. I don't know how to fix that, because I'm obviously not going to ban media from talking about whatever they want to talk about, but I do think it's one of the main problems.

16 year old me couldn't be trusted with anything more than 90 horsepower. What has happened in the last 10 years that makes the current 16 year olds trustworthy to influence public policy?

When I was younger, in order to hunt, you had to go through a hunter safety course and pass it. And this was taken seriously. But, nothing prevented you from buying a gun. Later, you had to be 16, then 18 to buy guns and ammo.
Today, part of the problem is that the youth of today don't take anything seriously. Nothing. Everything is handed to them. If they don't have jobs, they live with mommy and daddy and get food stamps. Why should they get jobs? Why should they take anything seriously?
What will happen in 20 years when the mommies and daddies start to disappear and these lazy kids are left to fend for themselves unequipped to do anything, except work at Burger King? Where will our once great nation be then? In the toilet and taken over by politically correct, save the world from themselves, do-gooders.
In Fumo Pax Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy cigars and that's close enough.
Maybe they don't take anything seriously because they've never been asked to? I feel like some people will always be slackers no matter what but that the majority of people, when pushed, will step up to a challenge. Sadly the parents of this generation have done everything in their power to remove all challenges and obstacles because heaven forbid their little perfect Timmy have to fail and learn something from it

When this thread was started, banning AR-15s was a knee jerk reaction to the school shooting. It has evolved into a media frenzy, utilizing young people to push a political agenda. Has anyone stopped to think of who may be financing this? Do you really thing a couple high school kids could organize this in a few days? Use your google fu and chase the money. If your persistent you will find George Soros, Michael Bloomberg and several members of the Democratic Party. This movement was already in place waiting to execute. I live close to Stoneman Douglas HS. Believe me these Tide Pod eating teens are being manipulated like never before. On TV they have told a sitting Senator he was stupid and didnt know what he was talking about. The other day they threatoned to vote congress members that did not vote to ban ARs out of office. Does anyone not see the disrespect? and uhm sorry kids, only a handful of you can vote. By the time most can vote, those voting to ban ARs will have already been voted out of office by clear thinking adults. Check out the liberal media source YAHOO. They are plastered with articles about the kids, then look at the comments, not many adults or even young people agree with the agenda. The fact are all there if you do the research.
And for sure do not believe what you see on the news about Stoneman Douglas High School. The majority of kids you will see on the news making the march that they say go to school there, do not. Look at the pictures and video from Feb 14th and the ones from today, you tell me the difference tonight or tomorrow.

To the OP. IMHO. Having been in "security", sold guns from a B&M, worked with police, taught safety and even tried my hand at gunsmithing. Anyway I am no stranger to firearms and the laws (22,000 and counting) that supposedly govern their purchase and use.
A background check (nationwide), and a safety course should be mandatory (the 1st purchase) in every state. Having lived as long as I have I do not believe todays 18 year olds have anywhere near the maturity and wisdom to be able to go into a store and purchase a firearm. I know every generation has bemoaned "the kids", but they still went to real schools (of the day). Honor, personal responsibility and being able to learn on your own are traits fast disappearing. If I look at all of the near 18 and older kids I know, maybe 25% are capable of mature decision making. And in this rural area I honestly believe kids are better schooled and parented then in other areas. Here the 3 Rs are still taught along with real social studies, history and ENGLISH. My favorite is they still teach penmanship. That said, I look at some of the parents who are drunks, trouble makers, poachers, outright bigots, and lazy. I am not at all surprised how bad their kids turn out. Maybe a background check on parents should be done. (There are more than a few people waiting for one kid to turn 18, so they can beat the cr^p out of him, including his father, uncles, neighbors and pretty much anyone he comes in contact with, and he will provide a reason. )
OOPS......Time to watch my Live PD recording, another real eye opener.

If the age to buy guns gets raised to 21, then the age to vote should be raised to 21. If one of these little morons are too stupid to own a gun, do we really want them voting?

We need to come to an agreement on a legal age for several things. I also don't think it's necessarily a gun issue as much as it is a cultural issue. I'm 28 and heard a lot of stories from my dad growing up about how they had a rifle club at school and would take their rifles to school. School shootings were almost unheard of back then. Banning AR-15s and other scary semi-automatic weapons won't do much to fix the issue. If someone wants to do damage, the the person will find a way to get what they want.
Several things need to be addressed before the issue can be resolved. Do I know what they all are? No, but I do think a good starting point would be focusing on gun education/safety, better background checks, and age requirements. We learn about sex, drugs, and alcohol in school, but not about guns. Why not? With as common as guns are, people need to have knowledge about them. As for the better background checks, I'm not 100% sure on this one so someone correct me if I'm wrong. We don't do universal background checks and that's something I'm for. Lastly, age is something that needs to be looked into. When the age laws were created for pistols and rifles, why were they set at different ages? Is it because it's harder to hide a rifle than it is a pistol? Is it because hunting was a way of life and men had to go out and hunt? I don't know the answer, but I'd like to know. When I was 18, I was an idiot and didn't really have the maturity to own a gun; however, I grew up around guns my entire life and my dad taught me how to respect a gun and what to never do with it. That being said, if he hadn't taught me anything about guns, I might have been an even bigger idiot and accidentally shot someone. Many kids today grow up without that knowledge and do stupid things with guns. As a result, you have many people making ignorant/misinformed decisions.
Also, why is it people blame the gun when someone is murdered but praise a person with a gun for saving someone? Pick one and stick with it...
And still no one on the national scene is addressing the real problem, the Self-control problem, at any level. Doesn't seem to occur to anyone that all these stories about 'when we were young and carried guns to school' are real, and that something must have happened to the hearts & minds of these adolescent lunatics in the interim.
(Hint: it wasn't the drugs, although the attitude about them was a contributing factor.)

I have to wonder how many caught the irony of the little girl with the shaved head wearing a Cuban flag on her jacket? Seriously? As she's protesting gun ownership in our country, she's wearing the flag of the government that first disarmed their population, then pretty much slaughtered them wholesale.

And yes, this did happen.
Ban assault rifles!!
Ok, what do you mean assault rifles?
An AR-15 automatic rifle.
The AR-15 isn't an automatic rifle. It's a semi-auto rifle.
Ban semi-automatic rifles!!
You realize that half the hunting rifles are semi-auto?
What? No they aren't.
Yes, yes they are. So you want to ban ALL rifles?
Well, that's not the point!
Ok, what is the point?
They need to ban all these deadly weapons!
Ok, cause no other gun is deadly? That makes no sense.
They need to make it so these guns can't kill!
Are you even hearing yourself?
They need to restrict who can buy these guns.
They do. Background checks, waiting periods and age limits.
The people who are gonna do harm with them won't follow the restrictions.
Well, it's too easy for them to buy these guns.
You've never bought a gun before, have you?
No, but I know.
No, you clearly don't know. Maybe you should educate yourself before making comments. You look like a fool.
Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy cigars and that's close enough.
