than for then, then for than. I don't understand why that is so difficult, one is an adverb the other a conjunction or preposition, they are spelled differently, pronounced differently, and have different meanings

thEn has an E, like the word nExt, which is what then means. thAn has an A, like the word rAther, which is what IT means.
Speaking of word confusion, fewer and less. If you can count them then they are fewer. If you cannot count it, then it is less. It takes me less time to explain this effectively than it does for you to mess it up, which results in fewer mistakes.
