You are literally right. However, I think what you had for lunch is no more a sandwich than a pizza is a sandwich. And I am unanimous in that opinion.

That makes sense now, your meatballs were not sandwiched yet. I was shuddering to imagine you trying to eat the thing without them the meatballs rolling off and landing in your lap.
