even if you outlawed political parties, you'd never get rid of them. Pelosi would still collaborate with schumer and mcconnell would still collaborate with cruz. They would still conduct "party business," even if you took away their pin the tail on the donkey.

A legitimate third party would solve many of those problems, especially if it lied somewhere in the middle, but this would also maybe create more problems than it solves; it would virtually eliminate the electoral mandate where majority rules.

Citizens United hurt the process, IMO, because if nothing else, it injected a sh*tload of cash into the parties, which served to fund all kinds of talking heads and meme generators that polarized the country. Now, the bases on both sides completely fund the parties, and hence, the news. In order to keep those base members happy and the cigar money flowing, the media on both sides has skewed the headlines to appease the funding source.

Speaking of news and money, I also think that the uninterrupted media access to the capitol also hurts our modern process. Tip O'Neil once said that the reason the process worked better a generation ago was because after the cameras were off, he could go across the aisle and develop relationships (i.e.- trust) with the other side. Now that there are 330 million tv cameras out there, any republican caught having dinner with a democrat is ostricized, and is ultimately defunded by party leaders. This results in only like-party members hanging with each other, and you end up with an "other side of the island" situation. It would be great, IMO, if they would only allow access for arguments and votes on the legislative floors and ban cameras on the rest of the grounds.

there is plenty of insanity and emotion-driven crap on all sides. Good governance is rational, politics on the other hand is leading everyone around by their noses with anger, that goes for dems and repubs.

That is indeed true. However, I have yet to see riots, looting, taking control of entire city blocks, and threatening of violence if their man doesn't win, among other things, when repubs don't get their way.

It does sadden me that we have a government that should be ruling righteously but is awash is filth and corruption, in every nook and cranny; if all we had to deal with was petty squabbling, I'd be happy as a clam. Some would say it is the citizenry who is at fault for being aloof and letting it all happen.
