That ^ brings back memories. After a couple of burned-out rebuilt starters, that's the way I started my '66 VW squareback for a year or so. It helped if it was parked on a gentle incline.

I used to pop the clutch to start my Subaru just for fun.
And always kept a screwdriver handy to cross over the solenoid
