Is it just me our did everyone used to know the geographical location of the mental hospital for the area they lived in and the location was used as a synonym for crazy?
For me, as far back as I can remember, if you wanted to tell someone they’re driving you crazy with their behavior you’d say “if you keep this up they’re going to take me to Bolívar”.
Bolívar Tennessee.
We pronounced Bolívar with virtually only two syllables. I guess you could say it rhymes with the last two syllables in revolver.

most state hospitals were closed in the 70's, it's either drugs or jail or both now.

It was 5P, the Psych ward in the Pottsville Hospital, or to Hamburg Center, the state mental hospital, like you said. Yep, if one was acting crazy, we'd say you belong in Hamburg. It closed in the 80s, I think.

For us it was “Waverly”. The infamous Waverly State Mental Hospital. Closed down in the ‘60s but is now a tourist attraction because it’s considered one of the most haunted places in America.
