I do have a basic "spice" grinder but rarely use it. I also usually don't rub out coins or flakes, instead preferring to fold and stuff them for a nice, rich, longer smoke. It's not as easy to keep lit, but I find it rewarding. Drying out the tobacco first really helps.

This old thread on Pipe Smoker's Den really helped me learn to love pressed tobacco, but I think most pipe smokers prefer to rub the tobacco out before smoking.

Appreciate the link to that post it has some great info!

@Ross_G89 , I started this thread a long time ago for cigar smokers who are interested in pipes. Lots of folks contributed, lots of information along the way.

I did buy a cheaper pipe, $18 along with a tamper, a box of filters and cleaners. Now I just need to find a few blends I like. Thanks for the recommendations every one.

Speaking of filters do many of you use them? I only used the one that came in my pipe and didn’t even realize it was there until first time running a cleaner through it. I might grab a pack to try em out now that I’ve figured out which end of the pipe goes in your mouth.

I haven't tried filtered pipes except for some old Carey Magic Inch pipes that had a papyrus tube that the smoke passed through under some vent holes that was said to give a cooler, smoother smoke. I did at times tape over the vent holes to get more flavor out of those pipes.

Pull 'em and discard. Though, it does leave a cavity that becomes prone to condensation and I find I have to use a pipe cleaner more often to get rid of the gurgle.

I have yet to experience any gurgling. I’ve heard about it quite a bit and kind of assumed it was because I only have a Cobb so far and they absorb moisture well

That and most cobs are straight. Any gurgling I’ve experienced has only been with bent pipes.

A little Cavendish goes a long way. Same for perique and latakia.

If you’re gurgling in a cob, with a 1/4” depth between bowl bottom and airway, you gotta stop slobbering down your stem 😂😂😂

    What is Sialorrhea (Excessive Drooling)?
Sialorrhea or hypersalivation literally means excessive saliva flow. Patients with sialorrhea will manifest this problem in one of two principle ways. Anterior sialorrhea is when patients have excessive anterior or forward spillage of saliva from their mouths, commonly called drooling, onto their faces and clothes causing difficulty with cleanliness, skin care, and socialization. Posterior sialorrhea is when patients have excessive posterior spillage of saliva from their mouths down their airways (tracheas) rather than being swallowed normally. This results in chronic lung irritation called aspiration which can sometimes progress to pneumonia. Often patients have a mixture of both of these types of sialorrhea.

Has anyone replaced a tenon? I broke the tenon on the Chacom cuddy, yea I know I can send it back to the factory in France for replacement, just wondering if anyone has been handy enough to drill it out and replace it themselves

Getting the piece of the tenon that's stuck in the shank out is the first order of business. I can check on Pipesmokersden for advice on this later. After that, you could look at drilling out the tenon a little bit and gluing a metal tube inside to connect the tenon to the stem, or you could look at a replacement stem. I have some assorted replacement stems that might fit, I would have to sand down the tenon to fit your shank and see if the style matches and see if the size of the tenon matches the shank, or you could send it out for a new stem.

I probably wouldn't be able to help work on this until July or August.

@dirtdude if you have a small enough tap or easy out you can probably get it out of the shank pretty easily. With taking a couple measurements you should be able to get a replacement at Vermontfreehand.com

I've been looking at the goods at the Vermont Co. I wouldn't think it would be too difficult to extract replace but was curious what you would do

Here's a tip if you need to sand down a tenon to fit your shank.

Where is your sense of adventure Shawn? If I were a working man I would agree, but let me check my schedule...nothing through the end of the month, let's take this on
