Monks know how to brew beer, they have been doing it for quite a while.
If it's available check out some Dubbels or Tripels from the Trappist breweries:
Chimay (any kind, but Blue is my favorite)
Rochefort 10 (you know it's good when there is a whole mess of sediment at the bottom)
Not exactly certified Trappist, but there is a monk on the bottle and it's damn good.
St. Bernardus Abt 12
I love American craft brews too, but these Belgiums are classic. The also age well.
