Breaking in the Peterson XL315 System Standard that @Stubble bombed me with some C&D Carolina Red Flake with Perique. Getting some bitter “bowl coating” notes on this first smoke. TYVM Steve.

My first bowl of this, I like it, a lot. Sweet, floral, va/burley with that harsh-ish undertone from the Rustica. To me, not as nic heavy as some of the fresh twists, 1792, Dark Plug. It is appreciated that the floral notes aren't as in your face as the typical Lakeland, but still definitely present. Good MacB flake. Thanks for the experience Rusty.
Dueling pipes, Peterson Early Morning Pipe from a freshly opened tin dated 08/10/21 (2110083603) against Sutliff Match Dunhill Early Morning Pipe (Sunrise) purchased in bulk Oct 2020 and transferred to Mylar. TL;DR Match EMP didn't live up to the original so I'm not going to stock up on more at this time.
The Peterson EMP gives off quite a bit of smoky Latakia while the Sutliff match was much more subdued and had a predominately sweeter note. The Peterson EMP smells like what I remember Dunhill EMP smelling like from past experience.
I'm simply alternating pipes to compare the blends quickly, after eating some candied ginger to cleanse the palate, starting with the milder smelling, sweeter Match blend.
The match blend comes off duller, sweeter, with little to no spicy, peppery retrohale that I remember from my favored Dunhill EMP and the current Peterson EMP. The name changed from Dunhill to Peterson, but the manufacture of the tobacco is the same so there should be no differences there.
The Peterson EMP is as I remember Dunhill EMP, nice complexity and bold flavors, appealing to a cigar smoker dipping his toes into pipes, and a nice, spicy, peppery retrohale.
Even though there's a 30% off sale on bulk Match EMP at TP, I'm going to hold off and stick with Peterson EMP to scratch that itch.

The Salty Dogs was better with some black licorice notes when smoked rubbed out. I think I'm going to try @Stubble's method of shaving the plug thin and rubbing it out to a shag.

So I believe my father in law has gave up on his search. Would anyone be up for a trade? Since I am a complete noob on pipe smoking I am looking to just see what this is all about and have a few cigars to trade. If not I completely understand.
