Enjoy, Ian. Have you tried a foam roller on your back?
I use one in the mornings or when it starts getting abnormally tight. It provides temporary relief. Consistent stretching and massages seem to be the best solution, but I need to do better at getting those things done.
Have you tried doing situps to counter it?

I tore the muscles in my back flipping 8-block sections of tank track off the back of a wet flatbed 5-ton truck when I was 31. It doesn't matter if you were lifting correctly when the other two guys let go and jump off the truck and you're stuck on the end of the strip trying to keep it from sliding down your belly and removing any protruding parts on the way down.
Still hurts, more than 30 years later. VA gives me muscle relaxers, which help. Naproxen makes my blood pressure go over 200/100, Motrin eats the stomach lining, and more powerful pharmaceuticals come with a whole host of problems I don't need. Ice rubs help, but it's hard to convince yourself to get started. Heat helps, if one only puts the heat on for 15 minutes. Succumb to the urge to leave the heat on and you're in for increased pain for a very increased length of time, or at least that's how it works for me.
The best exercises I've found have been regularly walking, and one exercise in particular; lie flat on your back, bring your feet in with knees bent until your feet are flat on the floor, then gently press the small of the back down flat against the floor for a count of 5 and release. Repeat a few times, increase repetitions as you're able. Don't rush it. Better benefits than sit-ups or crunches by far.
Good luck, Ian, and remember, few things are forever. But, back pain is one of those few things.
Oh, and Peter's right, retirement helps greatly! I can be as busy as I want, but only as busy as I want, not somebody else's idea of what I want.

Went 20+ days with no measurable rain. Last few days have seen large amounts. Last night and this mornings rain has caused major flash flooding in the area. Everything is good here…but it’s been a long damn night helping others.
I read they're saying it'll be weeks to have to the final count of lives lost. That terrain, with the hills and hollers and no flat spots to build other than the bottom of a valley, presents some real problems IMHO.
You’re exactly right Peter. It’s not that those areas have never flooded before. It’s the fact that more and more people have moved into the area and all the prime locations are taken. That leaves them with the choice of investing a lot of time and money into a piece of land that is a little more off the beaten path or doing like so many of them choose and park a mobile home in a low lying area.
There are a few areas that had not flooded like this before and in my opinion that lies at the feet of the Corps of Engineers.
Last I knew the death toll was at 26 but there are still quite a few missing and unaccounted for.
Opened my 401k statement. I heeded all the warnings and didn't log in at all this year but I couldn't help myself when it came in the mail today. Dammit.
I feel your pain ^. At least it isn't eating into what I put in, yet. % Inflation is taking care of the unearned profit..Calvin is probably right---invest in actual stuff that you can use.

I do crunches and pushups, and since doing those things regularly I do notice an improvement.
