VoltaireMy Dad took Bertrand Russell's philosophy class at Northwestern many years ago, came away believing that he himself was an atheist, but that kids should be raised in church nonetheless. Net effect on our family was that it was many years before Dad declared himself to be a Christian, although he remained active in the church.
The whole thing pissed Mom off terribly. I learned all this when Mom saw me reading Bertrand Russell's "Why I am not a Christian". I had never known this until after my Dad was gone.
Dad didn't know Voltaire, though.
