That's a pretty cool looking Stanwell.

Thanks Wayne!  It is a 1995 pipe of the year.  I have a Stanwell pipe of the year for each of my kids birth year.  1990, 1995, 2002, and 2004.  Believe it or not...the 2004 was the hardest to locate.

Since my beloved Dark English is still out of stock, I thought I'd try something to make up for it.  The McClelland 925 is their substitute for Dunhill 965, which I like, so I tried the 925.  It's OK, but missing something.  So, I put together this:

    6 oz 925
4 oz Izmir ribbon cut (Turkish)
    2 oz Stoved Virginia.

That came out pretty well, but a little too much tongue bite, so I added:

    2 oz McClelland Oriental 2045,

and that has smoothed it out nicely.  I didn't reproduce the Dark English, but did come up with a very nice smoke!

I wonder if I'd have been better off using ribbon cut yellow Virginia instead of the Turkish?

    I'm happy, either way.  :)

I just bought a corncob pipe and a Boswell English Sampler. I've never really smoked a pipe before, but so far it's pretty nice. I haven't tried any of the aromatics yet since I don't really like flavored cigars or sweet liquors in general. I am sure I will eventually breakdown and try some, but so far I have like the English blends (of the three bowls I've had).

Aromatic pipe tobaccos are quite a bit different that flavored cigars or liqueurs. Just smoke them slowly, and let them dry before you pack them.
