A collage about the Ulvade killings. Mixed media 16" x 28"
I ended up sending this collage to a non profit in Uvalde. Here is the letter I composed that I included. I am posting this in response to all the shootings that are taking place I the hope that the letter may help some of the victims.
Dear Sirs, Ms., October 8 2022
Uvalde’s tragedy put my heart on the ground. The first thing I did was walk to our local county rural fairgrounds on Sunday. I was there alone so I walked to our flagpole and lowered the American flag to half staff and the flag remained in that position for three weeks.
The need to do something more was strong within me.
I have been making art as a living for more than 41 years so I climbed the hill to my studio and got to work. This collage is what I came up with.
I am a Vietnam Marine combat veteran and no stranger to gun violence. That experience changed my life and figured greatly in the creation of this effort.
When humans are exposed to savagery their hearts become wounded. This is true of children, women and men. To protect their wounded hearts they develop a shield. All do this. These shields they carry the rest of their lives. Love can heal a wounded heart but love cannot get through the shield. To heal, those traumatized must learn to lower their shields. At first emotion pours as a river over the partly lowered shield. It can be overwhelming. As this happens the shield snaps up. Only lowering their shields slowly over time works. I hope those children, women, and men who survived and were hurt by this tragedy learn to lower their shields so the healing power of love can enter their wounded hearts.
Do what you wish with this collage this piece is yours now.
My heart goes out to all who have been physically and emotionally wounded by this senseless act of evil. Accept this as a token of my love and compassion.
I hope and pray that some healing comes from this.
The photo may not do this justice... but in person, it has depth and shading that are pretty cool. It's about 6" tall and made from a paper that comes from the Netherlands. A good friend of mine from church, a retired art teacher and 10 years my senior took up these "fenster sterne" (window stars) as a hobby last year in a very big way and wanted to help a handful of his fellow parishioners get our feet wet with an entry-level design. Each point of the star starts off as a roughly 2"x4" piece of the paper and is folded, creased, unfolded, and folded again in a precise sequence, and then all eight are glued together. I could see myself getting into this; it's like most hobbies in that it's both relaxing and an escape.
I finally finished the big serving cutting board. Extra deep juice groove with a pour spout in the corner, should come in handy. Oiling it today, tomorrow I will wax it. The last board is almost done. Just a little more sanding and juice groove it.

Finally made progress. Everything is to thickness, cleaned up and squared up. Letting it rest before I cut to length and router all the mortises. Getting there!

Plug cutting jig. Turn the flakes sideways after slicing them up and it works great for a cube cutting too.

Sad that wisdom is so expensive.

Next is a work in progress. Roughed out and background painted. More male than female . Both are 30" by 40"
