If AOC has anything to say about this…we aren’t far behind implementing this!!???

Telehealth services—such as video calls with doctors and medical advice via phone or email—are at risk of disappearing at year's end.

Got a call from my boss this morning. Apparently, since Christmas and New Years both fall on my day off, I'm being forced to take two more days off. State law must have changed or something.

it is the birth of another hungry beast:

Growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence-focused data centers is amplifying domestic power issues across the US. More than 75% of all distorted power readings across the country are from homes that lie near data centers, Bloomberg reported, and new facilities are “adding stress to already fragile grids.”

Several companies are investing in nuclear power just to power their AI computers. They’ve went as far as to buy part of Three Mile Island and are currently working to reopen it.

    Electric vehicle or nuclear power?

Me personally, I think it’s a great idea to give “self-thinking” computers access to nuclear power.

North Korean hackers stole $1.3 billion in cryptocurrency in 2024, a record. Just 47 North Korean attacks accounted for more than half the estimated total $2.2 billion stolen from crypto platforms this year, according to a blockchain analysis company. Earlier in December, the US Department of Justice indicted 12 North Koreans who allegedly committed money laundering and fraud, stealing $88 million while posing as remote IT workers for US companies. Officials have warned for years that Pyongyang backs hacking groups, Bloomberg reported, and that the hackers focus on cryptocurrency as a way of raising cash in the face of international sanctions.

    From the meme thread:

Is it just me? I'm almost certain I remember seeing that same meme, different dates, at New Year's Eve in 2016/2017. There were big anti-Trump riots on inauguration day 2017. I doubt that the same large groups will be motivated to protest this inauguration. Too many of them voted for Trump this time.

@Bob_Luken , what's wrong with you? Don't you remember Trump's last presidency? Remember? TV shows like "The View" were forced off the air? Women were made to abandon their shoes and go about barefoot? Soldiers patrolling the streets enforcing dress codes? Armed troops shutting down civilian establishments that catered to those whose lifestyles he disapproved of? And all the wars he started? Don't you remember? It's all happened before, right?

Oh, wait, none of that sh!dt happened, no matter how often those who twist the truth try to convince us.

you would think that with billions at stake, supply, distribution, and consumption would at least try to work together.

    Phil Noble/Reuters
Bottlenecks in attaching renewable energy to the grid are slowing the energy transition worldwide. UK consumers will likely face a $2.25 billion bill this year to pay wind farm operators not to produce electricity, because at peak supply times the grid can’t handle the input.

  • Rdp77Rdp77 Posts: 6,961 ✭✭✭✭✭

The problem is the “peak supply times”. If the input from the wind turbines was consistent then there wouldn’t be a bottleneck affect. Since it is not consistent the other sources of power are continuously operating and doing so consistently. The wind turbines are simply not reliable enough nor do they produce enough energy to operate on their own. The rest of the energy grid can’t just shut down whenever the turbines decide it’s time to pump power to the grid.

I guess this shows how little I understand electricity. My assumption has been that turbines would power batteries from which the flow would be metered into the grid. In my mind the problem of erratic production from the windmills would thus be eliminated by the batteries gaining power during low flow times, and discharging during high flow times, and ceasing to discharge when the battery reached a preset low voltage number. Conversely, when the battery is full the power flow is directly input to the grid. Is this not achievable?
