When I turned 65 five years ago I could finally go on Medicare for health insurance, which meant I no longer had to stay within Medicaid's income limits - Medicaid (Badgercare, if you're in WI) has much cheaper premiums and co-pays compared to the Marketplaces) but in my case, reported income had to be ~$1200/mo. or less to stay covered by it.
So, having Medicare meant I could start drawing a small pension and start my Social Security benefit. When I went to the SS office they told me I'd be making a mistake by claiming my own benefit; there was a widower's benefit available because my late wife paid into SS over the years. They told me that her benefit was $200/mo. more than mine, and that I could draw her benefit while letting mine grow at 8% until I wanted to switch to my benefit.
And that's what I did today. Since I'll be 70 soon, my benefit has matured about as much as it's going to, so this is the time to switch over. It turns out the increase i not only the 8% but also the COLA, the cost-of-living-adjustment they dole out every year, based on inflation.
Lo and behold, starting next month I'm getting a $730/mo. raise!
I can finally start smoking good cigars!
I get so much joy listening to my children talk about their adventures at work. Really does bring joy to my shriveled little heart hearing about things that are new to them. 😆😆
Back from the cardiologist -- clean bill of health, precautionary stress test next week. Dr. Quote: "once you are in your 70s things go downhill fast" lol. So reassuring.

Started clean up. Top of a big White Oak mixed with the top of a Black Birch just missed our little cabin. . Chainsawed for a couple of hours. Cannot work like I did when I was a young man.

Flushing out the motorcycle clutch reservoir today. Very dirty and was slipping. No damage to the friction plates 🤙🏼.
A good cigar and whiskey solve most problems.
Just the money I've saved over the last 10 years, not to mention the associated hassle of wearing glasses, made the surgery worthwhile.
Had to put a humidifier in the drying room.
