Speaking of media I had to turn the local news to the metal channel 830 on Direct TV....They had some psychotherapist come on to help calm “panicking and scared and frightened people” Enough is enough for me!!! Take some fvcking Xanax...this is beyond absurd!!! The media is making the Corona Virus sound like Ebola when fact is symptoms are no worse than the common cold to the flu. Yes the flu can kill it kills thousands or so of Americans every year don’t see people going nuts over that every year.

It’s tough to make heads or tails of this, and basically this is having a dramatic response of which we are uncertain if this is warranted for every state. Pacific Northwest and New England states appear to be hit hard, deaths and severe illness have been seen in younger and healthier patients than presumed to typical for influenza like illnesses. China’s mortality data (death) has been driving this, appears to be warranted, but perhaps overestimated due to testing bias of the sickest patients.

Good news is that Wuhan( China) district which had thousands of cases daily just a few weeks ago, is now having less than 100 cases this week. They are closing the temporary hospital that they opened up .., there may be an end to this yet.

But ... I think we will remember this for the rest of lives .... March madness has never been cancelled before, international travel bans aren’t common either, and countless billions in work /wages lost. I am not passing judgement on this, because I can’t say that these things won’t save lives... it probably does...and maybe we will learn something about how manage this better ( with possibly something more serious in the future). The world is smaller, these things have been happening since the beginning of time, but we are more plugged and mobile than ever... maybe the next way of technology isn’t digital security, but infection control security.

I agree that this data needs to be verified in multiple settings to be convincingly “true”, I am hesitant to blame one person/entity for this because it seems like everyone is losing ...

How can you lose if you have every reason to profit from this? Not everybody is losing, trust me.

It’s tough to think it’s a big deal because we feel that the media is cramming it down our throat... but it’s clearly not as bad as it looks. That being said... how much do you do to increase protection, I mean it’s tough. There is a quote on this website that says something like “ anyone can say no... don’t be negative , offer a solution” . I don’t know the answer. Mass hysteria doesn’t seem right. I am sure someone is making money shorting the stock market or China or something ...
I wouldn’t know who to blame if we could blame anyone... who are you guys thinking?

We live in a blame society, but it's not always necessary to blame someone or something. We live in an ultra connected, extremely mobile world with unbelievably densely populated places. Widespread communicable diseases are inevitable and controlling them is impossible. We can't control it, and our lack of control is what most people find the scariest.

I don't know, @VegasFrank I am of the mind that unfettered Communism and Socialism are pretty frightening, and we've become so accustomed to being herded around like cattle that we've even got one running for Prez openly. I'd say that's far more catastrophic than any damn flu virus, especially with spring right on the horizon.

If the media doesn't stop inflating this ridiculous pandemic it's only a matter off time before people start getting robbed for there TP, bottled water, food, etc. Instilling fear in people who are already panicking is creating a very dangerous situation...

Wandered into the local Sportsman's Whorehouse yesterday. Every AR & AK clone and all the ammo for them had been bought. Guess ya gotta guard all that paper somehow. I stand by my statement: People have lost their damn minds.

I'm still troubled by what I did for that Klondike bar...

In as few words as possible. This virus is new. It's spreading fast. Even if victims don't die, there can be complications that could cause very serious permanent lung damage for certain people. Social distancing will slow the spread. Slowing the spread will ease the overcrowding at hospitals for these serious cases. Panic is one extreme and the opposite extreme is pretending it's no big deal.

You just fuckk'd the minds of 99% of america with that sensible comment.

BTW visiting Walmart is a pandemic in itself. For some reason i went there and it will be the last visit there ever. The Toilet Paper armagedon is unreal.

I have yet to figure that out.

Oh crap. I was hoping they didn't start on the ammo next.

First, let me say that I'm not disagreeing with you at all. Exercising precautions and lowering the response is a great idea.

However, is it really new? Or, have we just figured out how to identify something that's been around for ages? I think about how many negative flu swabs I've seen from people who seemed to obviously have the flu. Even when I know for sure that the swab was correctly collected, I did it myself. Could those have been unidentified Corona cases? Just something to wonder about.

One outcome I'm hoping for is that people will realize that they need to stop going to work when they're sick. It's become a real problem in our society. "I was sick, too, but I went to work anyway" they say, and then look around expectantly for praise for their heroic actions and dedication. Pure stupidity.

Yeah, the situation creates a conundrum. The worker needs to get paid, for which the company needs to make money, which they make less of when all the workers get sick. There should be paid sick time, but douchebag ash-holes take advantage of that and play hooky and skrew all their fellow employees along with the company. A doctors excuse costs everybody, and exposes people to various other illness, and other people to your illness. Catch-22.
