You have to be extremely careful with some of the newer bourbons on the market. A good deal of them are not distilled by the people bottling them at all. Some by bulk blends from a main distillery (there is a rather large one in Indiana) and the package it with a fancy label.
I've read that in several different blogs and sites, sad to hear and that's too bad but thanks for the heads up. Oh and congrats on 1K posts Matkn!!!
The place is called LDI, owned by MGP. Rye is actually a bigger culprit than bourbon right now because it's hot and hard to make well. Even some distillers only bottle LDI rye. That's not to say there aren't lots of bullsh!t bourbons with lots of bullsh!t stories on their bottles. Some bottlers make tweaks, like casking (Angel's Envy) but a lot are pure marketing.

Yeah that's a damn shame but sadly not that surprising especially when you consider how much it happens in so many other markets as well. Case in point is the cigar industry as well. Tons of that behavior going on in many companies and manufacturers

It's kinda sad how many of these "small" boubon (and cigar too, I bet) companies are just an arm of the same corporation. I guess from manufacturing stance, it makes sense, but I really hate to see stuff like one company producing a ton of rye and it getting basically re-labeled as "small batch" and artisanal. You're right, Ken, just bullsh!t. Oh well, I guess if it tastes good, then drink it, and don't pay for the story.
Midwest Grain Products Ingredients (MGPI), Lawrenceburg, IN. Formerly Lawrenceburg Distillers Indiana (LDI) and before that owned by the now dissolved Seagram's company, this large distillery near the Kentucky border makes bourbon, rye, corn, wheat and malt whiskeys as well as gin and neutral spirits. While they don't market any of their own whiskey, the distillery makes whiskey for a growing number of other labels. It's hard to always tell which companies are using MGP as their source, but the following is a listing of whiskeys that are likely distilled by MGP:

Perfect! Thanks for doing that Gray and really appreciate the info Doug, there's 3 or 4 on that list that I have personally had and really really enjoyed but that was definitely an eye opener, there's also a few in that list I've wanted to try but now I'm not quite so sure dunno whether to be a bit concerned or not.

Rudy I figured it out. We don't have a problem at all, we have both proven that we don't have any problem whatsoever buying whiskey Case in point I picked up this today, wheated bourbon that the whiskey specialist at my store (they specialize in wine and whiskey of all types) was really pushing hard. Was same price as Buffalo Trace, W.L. Weller Reserve, Larceny and a few bucks cheaper than Old Grand Dad 114. Hope it lives up the the hype they were saying.
